Street Food

The Stand

The product:  Mak hai

It is called "Mak Hai," and I am still not sure what all is in it. Nor am I really sure what it is. First of all, it is a sort of a dinner dish, a sort of a dessert, and an icy dish as well. It is, quite frankly, one of the weirdest things I have ever eaten. And it is really, really good. Just a bit hard to characterize.

The dish is, as I said, icy. There is a tapioca base in which is mixed cooked pumpkin, some bean like an adzuki, some tofu like stuff and other bits of sweetish vegetables. Over this is a layer of the local coconut mixed with ice and it is topped by a swirl of sweetened condensed milk. I swear, it looks like a sno-cone in a bowl.

I can tell you that it is good, that it contains a bunch of protein and all of the sugar you would need for a solid hike. Other than that, words still sort of fail me, but I am going to have another go at it tomorrow night.
