Sambor Prey Kuk

Sambor Prey Kuk is a series of temples nestled in the jungle about 35 kilometers from Kampong Thom.  This is not Angkor Wat.  There are no hordes of tourists here.  In fact, there is almost no one here.

There are three main temple complexes, each surrounded by the remains of latterite brick walls.  The temples are built of brick and stone.  Many have collapsed into mere mounds of rubble.  The jungle is eagerly trying to make mounds of those temples that still remain standing.

These temples re-date Angkor Wat and the dawn of the great Khmer Empire.  Most of these temples date from approximately the 7th Century AD,  These temples were the inspiration for the style of Angkor Wat.  When this territory was incorporated into the Khmer Empire, its first rulers saw these temples and incorporated this architectural style into what would become the great temple at Angkor.

One of the bas-relief panels that still remain intact.

This temple complex was actually built by the Khmer.  It dates from the Ninth Century AD, and the flowering of the Khmer Empire,

Around every turn of the path is another wall or temple, or tumble for rubble.  It is solitary walking here.  Venture just a short ways from the first temple complex and you will be alone.
