At a distance, Wat Damrey Sor is just that, another city Wat. On the raised veranda that surround this Wat, it is quite a different story. Amazing panels, executed in both painted wooden carvings and painted plaster work, depict vivid scenes from the Ramayana Epic.
Rama and Sita suffer the vagaries of evil demons, capricious Gods and a very fickle fate. I was captivated by the panels, walking around and around the veranda to take the story in. This most classic of Hindu tales is very influential in the Khmer world, which was a Hindu empire long before it became Buddhist.
